Description (last modified by greiner)

Background

We currently mention Acceptable Ads like this on the first run page:

Annoying Ads will now be blocked

We'd like to encourage websites to use straightforward, unobtrusive advertising. That's why we've established strict guidelines to identify acceptable ads, which are shown under default settings. If you still want to block every ad you can disable this in a few seconds.

This doesn't make it obvious enough that this is enabled by default, and we should highlight the disabling part in the text. Therefore we agreed on changing the text.

What to change

Replace the existing Acceptable Ads explanation text on the first-run page with the following text:

Annoying ads will now be blocked

Acceptable Ads are still allowed because we'd like to encourage websites to use straightforward, unobtrusive advertising. That's why we've established strict guidelines to identify acceptable ads, which are shown under default settings. If you still want to block every ad you can disable this in a few seconds.

It's great that we want to make it clearer that Acceptable Ads are enabled. However, if you are installing Adblock Plus for the first time and the largest text on the page says "Ads are enabled" instead of "Ads are now blocked" then you might be wondering whether Adblock Plus is supposed to block any ads at all or even whether it might add additional ads.

Adding a subtitle should be no problem but I'd recommend not to replace the headline.

Good point, yeah. Do you think that'd be obvious enough Kai?

Hi,

sorry for my late reply.

Basically i agree to Thomas point. The headline should stay as it is (at least in its meaning) and then we should add a prominent subtitle.

To me anything that highlights the fact that AA are enabled by default and that the user can disable it and how, is supportive.

Best
Kai

 • Ready unset

Sure, let's go with a subtitle then. Unsetting Ready until we find one.

How about just using "Acceptable Ads are enabled" as the subtitle? Here's what it would look like:

Annoying Ads will now be blocked

Acceptable Ads are enabled

We'd like to encourage websites to use straightforward, unobtrusive advertising. That's why we've established strict guidelines to identify acceptable ads, which are shown under default settings. If you still want to block every ad you can disable this in a few seconds.

Adding Sven.

Maybe "Acceptable Ads are still allowed" is clearer?

Can we agree on the following? Otherwise, if Sven can come up with a nice design for adding it as a subtitle (usually, it's not good practice to have a headline that's directly followed by another headline), I'd also agree with Felix' design using Kai's text for the subtitle.

Yeah, I like your version Thomas. Should be obvious enough how I picture it.

 • Description modified (diff)

 • Ready set

Since there have been no objections so far I set this to ready now. The german translation will be added on CrowdIn after the necessary changes have been made to the code so I removed it from the description.
