Apple provides quite a limited crash reporting.

  • the customer must enable a certain obscured, scarily labelled switch
  • the switch applies OS-wide - allow reporting for all apps or none
  • the symbolication is complicated to get right
  • the passing of reports from the device to iTunes Connect is rather unsatisfying black box - users mostly report way more crashes than seen in iTunes
  • works only for apps in AppStore - there is an option of Testflight Beta but it's very unsuitable for continuous releasing

What to change

Integrate Hockeyapp SDK, which provides a crash reporting parallel to the default one, but

  • is enabled per app (may need a user consent confirmation dialog)
  • symbolication is stored separately and can be fixed at any time independently on iTunes
  • if it crashes, it gets reported, with certain exclusions:

  • works for any app binary uploaded to HockeyApp
