by greiner: Our blog posts don't look nice on social media when they're being shared so we should also add missing metadata before we add share buttons to it (we're typically using Open Graph and schema.org HTML tag annotations for that).

These requirements are now outdated.

  • @jeen can you weigh in on this? (which networks should we support and what should it look like?)
  • @jnink CCing you here because this may be relevant to the privacy policy if we choose to use embeded like/share buttons (which I think we can avoid)

thanks juliandoucette. As already mentioned in connection with another ticket, those sharing buttons are violating privacy laws in Germany (please refer to the attached decision of the German data protection authorities in connection with social plugins (German only)).

There is a solution in place, using sharing buttons in compliance with the privacy laws. It is the Shariff solution from heise, which you can implement without too much effort: https://github.com/heiseonline/shariff

In a nutshell, if we still want to implement the sharing buttons,

  • please do that only with the shariff.
  • as mentioned by juliandoucette we need to change the privacy policy and add a section about sharing buttons

I think in addition to Google Plus, Twitter and Facebook, I would also add Linkedin as the final social network.

  • Cc wspee added
  • Keywords goodfirstbug added
  • Priority changed from P5 to P4

A few notes:

  • I recently asked the communications teams about which social media networks we should support
    • Based on that (longer list) I suspect that we may be forgetting a few in this list
  • I think we can implement our own static share buttons
    • But this is non-trivial (especially on our blog)
      • As a result, we may not resolve this issue before we implement another blogging platform
