Description
Environment
Win 7 64bit Pro
Internet Explorer 11.0.9600.17633 (Update version 11.0.16 (KB3021952)
Adblock 1.3.0.0 installed approximately 3 weeks ago with no problems
Easylist, Non-intrusive unchecked.
How to reproduce
- Click ABP icon on bottom right
- Click Check for Updates
- Wait for Downloading update to complete, then click Yes to "A new version of Adblock Plus is ready to be installed."
- Get a "BONG" sound and nothing on the screen
- Go to Manage Add-ons and see version is still 1.3.0.0
Observed behaviour
- Check Event Viewer and see:
The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
and APPID
{000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
to the user EHONPHN-15\Justin SID (S-1-5-21-3147735577-595886406-769813577-1002) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.
- See this same message for each attempted update. Initial install had no issue.
(3. Downloaded 1.4.0 installer, ran it, and am now updated to 1.4 - something is wrong with the built in updater)
Expected behaviour
Update to newer version

Can't reproduce this. Do you have some custom security settings or are you running on enterprise network where system administrator sets your security rules?

It is a corporate, actually State, laptop BUT I am a local Administrator, and it is NOT part of a Domain, just a Workgroup. They are not very sophisticated about security & IT here, so I would honestly be very surprised if any security policies were changed, though it's possible (I come from an IT background). Based on the error one would think there must be some custom security setting, but I found nothing that stood out in Component Services administrative tool or Local Security Policy. Everything looks like a standard Win 7 64 bit pro install. And remember I am able to install new versions of ABP - it's the built-in update that causes this. And based off google searches, while uncommon, others before me have had this issue.
I'm happy to help you debug it, or if you want to close it, since I'm able to install new versions manually, that's ok with me.

The class ID in the error report, 000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046, is not one that is part of ABP (it's nowhere in the source tree). From some searching, it seems to be part of SharePoint. I have no idea why SharePoint should be interfering with update, but it appears that various people have figured out how to work around the problem by tweaking permissions.
