Description

Background

By #3802, we created a website informing ABP users about adware and how to get rid of it. We can now drive affected users to it.

What to change

Add the Adware filters filter list to every ABP for Chrome instance similar to the Adblock Warning Removal List so that it matches against the filters in it even when displayed as disabled. In opposite to the Adblock Warning Removal List, use our notification UI to display the following text to the user once a filter matches and don't show any choices to enable the list with that notification: "Your computer may be infected with software injecting ads. Click here for help." with "Click here" being linked to the website created by #3802 in the user's respective locale if available, falling back to English.

Could we go with some text that sounds less spammy than "Your computer may be infected"?

I'd suggest explaining why we show such a message in the first place.
e.g. We detected a script on this site that is known for injecting ads.

Also, the anti-adblock notification is part of Core so I have my doubts whether this requires two separate tickets for Firefox and Platform.

The notification text was discussed in deep and this is the best compromise we could come up with to tell users about an urgent need of action without sounding even more spammy. Being more detailed will distract users from taking action, that's what the website is for.

It's great that we're aiming for a non-spammy message but when I see the Google search results for "Your computer may be infected" I'm not convinced that this text achieves that.

Note: Currently we have a URL parameter that controls the visibility of warning message on the page https://adblockplus.org/adware?warning=true

As specified in #3809, the notification text to read:

1st notification:

  • Title: Your computer may be infected with software that displays unwanted ads
  • The body text: Do you need help removing the software?
  • CTA options

2nd notification (IF Button 2 selected):

  • Title: Your computer may be infected with software that displays unwanted ads
  • The body text: If you're busy right now, we can help you out tomorrow.
  • CTA options
    • Button 1: Yes, remind me later <show notification again in 24 hours>
    • Button 2: No, I don't need your help

@wspee is investigating if we can chain the notifications in Chrome.
